School Lunches
The Vaynor has its own school kitchen ably run by our cook Sophie Cardy and her team. The meals offered are nutritious and Sophie uses fresh ingredients, which she sources locally whenever possible, in her home cooked recipes. Some items come from our own gardens, grown by the children.
Meals are ordered in advance on Friday for the following week. Parents may choose a whole week or just a day or selection of days and payment is made through 'ParentPay' our online site and by Thursday for the following week. Parents may pay for up to a half a term or term in advance if they wish. If your child is absent, the meal will be credited. If you think your child is entitled to free school meals please contact the school office.
Packed Lunches
Children may also bring their own packed lunches to school. We ask that these are brought in a suitable container and that parents take appropriate measures for food hygiene e.g. an ice pack. Preferably drinks should be non-sugary and in a flask or plastic bottle.
In the interests of health and safety we do ask that children do not bring fizzy drinks, canned drinks and glass bottles.
In our drive to be a healthy school we do request that lunches follow healthy eating guidelines and are varied across a week incorporating fruit and vegetables/ salad items. We also ask that they do not contain chocolate, sweets or excessive amounts of crisps and cakes. Importantly, items with nuts such as Nutella or Bakewell Tarts should not be brought in as we have several children with severe nut allergies to even the smell of nuts or nut products. This also extends to shampoo and other toiletries.
If your child forgets their lunch we will try to call you. However, if this is not possible, the kitchen will provide a lunch and ask you to reimburse us later.
Snacks
Mid-morning snacks are a welcome boost for children's energy and brain power levels. Fruit is provided for all Reception and Key Stage One children by the Government. Key Stage Two are welcome to bring their own fresh or dried fruit and vegetables to consume at playtime.
Drinks
All children are encouraged to bring water to school every day. This is consumed throughout the day as there is a lot of research which proves that water hydrates the brain leading to increased concentration and therefore better learning. Children may also have milk at snack time. This is free for children under 5 years of age and is available for a small fee for others.
