Topic: The Vanishing Rainforest
This term we are learning about the impact the rainforest, in particular the Amazon has on life on Earth. What can we do to reduce to decline of the rainforests? How can we consider products we buy more carefully, thinking about the impact on the rainforest?
Our rainforest topic continues into our English lessons where children will innovate the Great Kapok tree focusing on setting descriptions, write persuasive texts convincing the audience of “The most important animal.” and create non-chronological reports on rainforests animals.
In Geography, children will be consolidating their atlas skills by locating the world’s countries focusing on South America, using maps, atlases, globes, and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe features studied and identifying the position and significance of Equator, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Northern and Southern Hemispheres
Children will describe key aspects of physical geography including climate zones and biomes and human geography including distribution of natural resources, land use and economic activity.
All of this fantastic learning will prepare pupils to speak passionately about why we must save the rainforest!
Maths
During this term, we will be focusing primarily on multiplication and division, using both mental and written methods to help us solve a wide range of problems. We will then move on to fractions and decimals, finding equivalents.
Science: living things and their habitats
In science this term, we are learning all about classification keys, grouping animals. They will then move on to exploring the human digestive system, teeth and construct food chains.
Art and DT
We have started our painting unit in art where we will be exploring the work of Henri Rousseau. We will be mixing paint colours to create a range of earthy tones and considering how choosing these affects the mood of the painting. We will be practising how to use a range of painting skills before then choosing which to apply to our final piece, which will link back to our rainforest theme. After half term, our DT topic will give us the opportunity to create a rainforest-inspired cushion using a range of sewing techniques.
